Restoration of Independence - Portugal

Restoration of Independence day always falls on December 1st each year and recognizes the return of rule to Portugal from Spain from the period of 1580 to 1640.

This day is patriotic day for the Portuguese people to reflect on the past history of their nation.

History

King Phillip II of Spain took power over Portugal after the death of King D Sebastiao at the battle of Alcacer Quibir in 1587. Being part of Spain got Portugal involved in many wars that weekened the country and in 1640 the nobility of Portugal rised up and took power back from Spain and returned it to the House of Braganca.
