Always occurring on September 9th, this holiday marks the day that Brazil won independence from Portugal. The exact date was on September 7th 1822.

There are celebrations in the capital with military parades, air shows and musical concerts for this special day. Many a time there will be fireworks and dancing throughout the evening and night time.

History

The start of this holiday began when the son of the Portuguese king, who ruled Brazil, declared independence from his father in Portugal. A war was waged and Brazil pulled through to winning, but very closely afterward the Portuguese son was unseated and a local Brazilian was left to rule the country.
