The New Year is a national holiday, meaning that many businesses and schools get to take the day off. Traditionally it is celebrated with the blasting of fireworks the night before or at midnight to mark the exact time the new year comes.
History
New Years originally occurred on March 15th with the old Roman calendar, but was changed to January 1rst with the update of the Gregorian Calendar. Thus began the New Year, yet it was not accepted by the Roman Catholic Church until 1582.
